From early 2024, shipping companies will be required to buy EU carbon permits to cover 40% of their emissions. The move comes as new EU rules about emissions will impact the shipping industry from next year. These ships are expected to save 2.75m tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. The 172m long ship is the first of a new fleet of 25 methanol-powered ships which the company hopes to launch fully by 2030. For the Maersk ship, the methanol will be produced by solar power in Denmark. The ship will run on green methanol, a fuel which has a lower greenhouse gas emission output than traditional fossil fuels. The world's first 'green' container ship was launched in Copenhagen on Friday by shipping company Maersk.
